The Importance of Math in day to day life

Mathematics is often seen by students as irrelevant, boring and of no use after school is completed. These things couldn't be farther from the truth, especially as technological advances make math more and more a part of our daily lives, even if it is behind the scenes. As we continue to develop, data sciences, mathematics and overall thinking skills built in math class become more important each day. There are numerous ways math is integrated into our everyday lives, including the lifelong skills it helps us to build and it’s necessity as we move into the jobs of the future.

Here are some key areas of our daily lives where math is critical:

Managing Your Home
●       Cooking & Baking
●       Telling time
●       Home decor & repairs
●       Gardening

●       Paying bills
●       Getting loans
●       Using credit cards
●       Budgeting

Travel
●       Driving
●       Booking flights & hotels
●       Currency conversions
●       Time zone changes

Shopping
●       Groceries
●       Clothing
●       Understanding sales & promotions
●       Determining how much you need of something

Entertainment
●       Art
●       Music
●       Sports
●       Calculating a tip

Nature
●       Understanding how/why things grow
●       Genetics
●       Chemistry
●       Navigating (without signs and computers)

As you can see, math is all around you and is required to be able to function effectively in today’s society. Everything runs on time, measurement and costs and life requires calculations and conversions all day long.

There are also some key skills gained from math outside of just formulaic knowledge. These are imperative to our cognitive ability to “get through the day” and are required for most jobs, not to mention building on the social skills we learn throughout our lives.

Math learning teaches us to

Think faster
Solve problems
Think critically
Find solutions using reasoning
Use relational thinking by explaining how things work and how they relate to each other
Use analytical thinking by learning how to investigate the world around us
Overcome frustration and uncertainty

Math has always been an important part of our occupations. From the nurse measuring medication to the insurance advisor calculating risk to farmers and gardeners in so many ways, math is used in almost every job today in some capacity, which will continue to grow as new technologies advance.

The illiterates of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but, rather those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.
-Alvin Toffler

Strong critical thinking, problem solving and the ability to digest and interpret data will be the essential job skills as we come into the next generation of the workforce. Students should be working now to develop the skills and mindset they will need to be successful in the future.

As you can see, math is necessary in almost every aspect of our lives and the practice of math learning creates important skill sets that will impact overall thinking for the rest of a child’s life.

Learning the foundations of math is so important! If your child is struggling with foundational knowledge or you’re looking to set them up for long term success, getting them started with a tutor who can focus on their areas of need and possible development should be your key focus.

5 Reasons why Private Math Tutoring is Useful

Whether a student is struggling, needs more of a challenge or just needs a regular check in, a private math tutor is a useful resource to ensure success in the classroom and to build positive attitudes towards learning.

When a student works with an individual tutor, they receive exclusive one on one instruction which offers numerous benefits. A great tutor will develop a personal connection with each student, providing a positive learning environment where skills can be learned and expanded while promoting independence, confidence and good habits.

In this article, we explore 5 key reasons why you should consider a private math tutor for your child.

  1. Personalized individual attention is one of the most important reasons to choose a tutor that provides private instruction. When instruction is tailored to the needs and learning style of each child, they receive a customized program that will take into account how they learn, what style best suits their capacity to understand a concept and what motivations will keep them engaged.
  1. As a tutor gets to know your child, they will strive to develop trust and rapport that will allow deeper learning to take place. This is another great reason to choose a private tutor. Students learn best from those they trust and a caring, supportive instructor who gets to know them builds the necessary trust and confidence to facilitate learning and growth.
  1. Skill development is the most common reason that a parent will seek a tutor for their child and is certainly a core reason that tutoring is useful. A tutor should assess your child's foundation knowledge, determine what skills they have and where gaps exist. Working to fill these gaps will provide the framework of the tutoring plan, with several other core competencies developing alongside technical skill. Other beneficial skills that typically accompany a great learning program are overall strengthened comprehension and continual reinforcement of learning. Tutoring will also help your child to stay on track during challenging units and over holiday and summer breaks.
  1. Another common benefit to working with a tutor is the introduction of a positive work space that is dedicated to learning with little distraction. Working at home, many students are often distracted or find that they feel more pressure with a parent around. A dedicated tutoring space allows the student to physically and mentally connect with the information they are learning.
Math concepts and styles of teaching have also changed significantly over the past few decades which often creates confusion when parents try to help teach or approach homework problems. A math tutor will be up to date on teaching techniques and the curriculum your child is learning at school.

  1. Independent tutoring encourages your child to become more autonomous by guiding them through self directed learning in a caring environment so they know support is there when needed. Many parents have found a huge improvement in attitude towards learning, as well as improved work and study habits. Children learn how to set goals and feel the reward of achieving them. Though skill development and homework support are often the primary motivators to starting tutoring, these unexpected character building skills are often the reason parents choose to stick with it long term. There really is no replacement for the opportunity to grow new habits with a dedicated personal tutor.
At Mathnasium, we believe that each tutoring experience should include all of these wonderful benefits and reasons to work with our amazing instructors. We strive to build a personal connection with you and your child that fosters learning, growth and skills that will help your child succeed both in and outside of the classroom.
